GTBank rewards undergraduate with new Mini Cooper

A winner has emerged at the grand finale of the Guaranty Trust Bank’s GTCrea8 Mini Cooper promo – Season 2 held on Friday at the bank’s corporate head office where the winner was announced.

Adebiyi Mariam Ajoke, a National Diploma 2 student of Business Administration from Lagos State Polytechnic, emerged the winner of the Season 2 GTCrea8 promo winning the star prize of a brand new Mini Cooper, a stylish fun-to-drive subcompact coupe with an efficient, boxy front-wheel-drive layout.

The GTCrea8 Mini Cooper promo also rewards undergraduates from different Nigerian tertiary institutions with scholarship monthly. This is in line with the bank’s decision to support education and financial discipline. Miss Shalom Elisha Wigwe, a 400 level Medical student of the University of Lagos was the proud winner of the Mini Cooper car in the Season 1 of the GTCrea8 promo while a 200 level student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Mr. Mohammed Yisa, was also rewarded with N1 million worth of scholarship for being the five millionth customer of the bank.

The GTCrea8 account allows students to conveniently carry out all their banking activities 24 hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the world, without having to step into a banking hall. The essence of the promo is to promote a healthy saving culture and an increased adoption of the use of alternate banking channels among Nigerian students. The bank also organises campus storms in various tertiary institutions across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, where students stand the chance of winning Nokia phones and other prizes instantly. All that is required to participate and benefit from this bonanza is for undergraduates in tertiary institutions to open a GTCrea8 e-savers account and conduct a minimum of three transactions on alternate banking channels such as ATM, PoS and Internet banking monthly to qualify for the draws.

In addition to the above criteria, students must maintain a minimum account balance of N5,000.00 for six consecutive months to be eligible for the star prize. The star prize winner will be selected by a raffle draw at the end of the promo season. Guaranty Trust Bank has created a microsite,, for ongoing conversation for its e-savers customers. The bank also has a versatile social media presence to continuously appeal to this burgeoning section of its market on facebook,, where students can also open GTCrea8 E-Savers accounts using social banking on facebook.

Petroleum Institute offers N1.8m MSc and PGD scholarship for graduate studies

The Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS) of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), last weekend, offered graduates N1.8 million worth of scholarship in its 12-month M.Sc. and PGD programmes.

Director of the institute, Professor Mike Onyekonwu, made this known at a news conference in Port Harcourt to mark its 11th anniversary/induction celebration, taking place today (Thursday).

He said interested applicants, who managed to scale through its “rigorous qualifying examinations and interviews”, would not only be awarded the scholarship, but would also enjoy free meal daily.

“This programme focuses on reducing the nation’s part-dependence on foreign expatriates to drive its petroleum industry.

“As a mark of giving graduates the best in petroleum studies, 40 per cent of our lectures are from France; 40 per cent from UNIPORT, while 20 per cent are from the oil and gas industry.

“Similarly, the institute does not admit more than 25 applicants in each programme to ensure lecturer-student bond in line with best global practices”, he said.

Onyekonwu said that the scholarship initiative, which began in 2003, was jointly sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Total Exploration and Production Nigeria (TEPNG) Limited, to improve graduates proficiency in the nation’s petroleum industry.

He disclosed that 42 M.Sc. and PGD students would be presented with certificates in Petroleum Engineering Scholarships Engineering/Project Development and Diploma in Petroleum Technology, totalling 250 graduates since the institute’s inception.

“About 50 per cent of these graduating students have been offered jobs by mostly local and global oil and gas players-a testament to our drive to remedy skills gap in the industry”, he said.

Onyekonwu explained that many graduates in the country yet to find jobs several years after graduation was partly due to lack of requisite skills for the few jobs available.

The director said that the institute through its research and development drive had produced and registered five patents, including “Optiwell drilling technology” which, he said, had revolutionised global oil and gas industry.

He called on qualified graduates who had interest in pursuing advanced studies in petroleum to apply for the scholarship programmes for 2015 academic session.
