Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has urged Nigerians to support the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing it as an idea to be proud of.
He made the call yesterday when the NYSC management, led by its Director General, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, paid him a courtesy call at the Government House in Dutse, Jigawa State.
According to the governor, the NYSC continues to be relevant more than 40 years after its founding and is deserving of continual support.
His words: “The need for Nigerians to know themselves and their country is still there, especially now, when there is so much ignorance and hatred. NYSC provides this platform for our country to know itself and this is why all Nigerians should support the scheme. If there is one idea all Nigerians should be proud of, it is the NYSC.”
Earlier, the NYSC director general and the Jigawa State Coordinator of the scheme, Hajia H. M. Bappah, commended the governor for providing the best NYSC orientation camp in the country and for doing a lot to enhance the welfare of corps members in the state.
Responding, Governor Lamido said: “What we are doing for the corps members is our duty to our children. It is not something we should be thanked for. These children are our children and it is our duty to make them serve their country in an environment that is safe, comforting and compassionate.”
